Since we've finished our rhythms, we are starting to work on instruments in 2nd grade!! I start this unit off with an activity where the students are given cards with the pictures and names of Orchestral instruments on them. When they have the cards, they try to sort them into our instrument families (Brass, Percussion, Woodwinds, and Strings). I give them a few hints along the way, but the goal is for them to look at similar qualities to see why they would be grouped together before we start working more closely with learning about the families.

He has picked out all the instruments that you have to blow into to get sound... now he's got to split them into the Woodwind and Brass Families!
