Rhythmic Dictation

One skill that we work on in all grade levels is something called Rhythmic Dictation.  This is a listening and writing activity where they are listening to a rhythm being clapped and having to write that rhythm down using their notation.  2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade are working on things like this right now, and 1st and 5th will be working on it later in the school year.  This is a super advanced skill that the kids are actually AWESOME at!  Check out these third graders showing us what's happening:

These ladies are showing they know what the rhythm is by raising their hands to share their knowledge.

He's writing down what he just heard, and he has a full board of other rhythms that he heard too!

She has her time signature and her hearts ready for dictating!  The time signature shows us how many beats our rhythm is going to have and the hearts show us those beats for our writing.

Being a master at showing what was clapped, he is transferring what is on his individual board to the big white board to show the class the answer!
